Salsa partnerwork is a conversation between two people, a dynamic dance of lead and follow. Our approach is built on this core principle. We steer clear of just teaching endless turn patterns, which can lead to disconnected dancing. Instead, we focus on the essential concepts of connection, technique, and musicality that elevate your social dancing and make every dance a memorable experience for both you and your partners.
Our Path 1 partnerwork classes cover all the fundamental On2 turns and moves, but with a deep focus on what truly matters: technique, positioning, frame, and connection. You will learn that a great dance is a dialogue where both lead and follow must actively listen to each other.
Within a few months, leads will not only have a wide variety of moves for social dancing but will also grasp concepts that make their lead feel incredible, getting them talked about for how they dance, not just for what they know. Follows will build the confidence to follow multiple kinds of lead, to be able to step and turn without a heavy reliance on the lead, and to add styling without disruption. They will feel more independent and empowered to have their say in the dance.
We strongly recommend students stay in Path 1 for 6-12 months to ensure all the fundamental material is properly learned and drilled.
In Path 2, students will learn more advanced partnerwork material, including intricate turns, different handholds, and more complex positioning. Building on the foundation of Path 1, we also dive deeper into musicality, learning how to interpret the different sections, rhythms, and energies within salsa music to create a more dynamic and artistic dance.
The key concepts at this level are worth drilling more than once, which is why we recommend students stay for the full 12 months. It's not uncommon for dancers to remain in this super fun and challenging level for much longer, as there is always more to discover.
Path 3 is the pinnacle of our partnerwork program. This class assumes students have a holistic understanding not just of their own role, but of the dance as a whole.
Leads know the follow's steps and positioning, and follows understand the lead's timing and impulse for every move. It should be second nature to know what’s happening across all counts for all kinds of moves.
